Engine Jerking at Steady Throttle

5 posts in this topic

Hi everyone,

My name is Ahmad and I live in Germany.

I recently bought a Honda X11. The bike has 17,000 km on it and is in great condition, but I’ve noticed some strange symptoms. It idles perfectly, but at steady throttle—especially between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm—it starts to jerk. This isn’t noticeable when accelerating, but you can definitely feel it during steady cruising.

In addition, I noticed a thin film of oil on top of the gearbox and near the bottom of the engine. The oil at the bottom seems to be coming from a small leak in the engine oil hose that goes from the bottom of the engine to the radiator. However, I haven’t been able to find the source of the oil on top of the gearbox.

Another thing I’ve noticed is a fuel smell in the engine oil. I’m not sure if this is normal, but I changed the oil and filter just in case. I can still smell fuel in the oil, although the oil level isn’t rising—at least not noticeably.

After doing some research, I found that this issue is often related to the fuel pressure regulator. I tried to test it by disconnecting the vacuum hose and turning the ignition on so the fuel pump runs. There were no fuel drops coming out, but I’m not sure if that’s the correct way to test it.

The spark plugs were replaced 7 months ago, according to the previous owner. When I asked him about the jerking, he said he didn’t know anything about it.

Right now, I’m stuck. Honestly, I’m a bit worried about damaging the engine, since I can’t tell if it’s a minor issue or something more serious. I read that these bikes sometimes behave this way because of the HECS3 system, so I can’t tell if this is just a characteristic of the model or an actual problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated—especially if someone has experienced the same issue and found a fix.

Thanks in advance!

Try finding an o2 eliminator to plug into the loom, they are available. at the revs you speak off at a steady throttle your on the closed loop of the fueling, if putting on the o2 eliminator on stops it, smooths it out your o2 (lambda sensor ) is goosed just leave the o2 eliminator on.

Thanks! I’ll give this a try and report back with the results.
Hopefully it does the trick.

Have a look here: https://www.healtech-electronics.com/products/ose/

Given that the bike is based on the Blackbird I see no reason to think it would not work, to be sure give them a ring they will confirm one way or another, also they are nice people.

I tried the O2 eliminator, but unfortunately the jerking is still there.
Overall, it feels a little smoother, but not really noticeable. So it seems it’s not the O2 sensor.

What should I check next?

Also, should I leave the O2 eliminator plugged in, or should I remove it?

Thanks in advance.
