Mouldy Fuel Lines?

6 posts in this topic

Ok, so I've been a good boy and listened to the guberment when they said 'don't go buying fish & chips in the next county' during the covidthingy.  With a BMW (320i '07) that needed my attention, the bike got a... uhh... extended rest.

On low humidity days, idled the engine faily often and kept hooked up to life support.  No problems, like a dog she wags her tail excitedly at the chance of 'outside', every time immediate start whatever the temp.

So I was kinda suprised when I turned the key and zero electrics came on.  I've done (I believe) all the standard battery/fuse/relay/earth/connector check&clean.  Next up is key unit switch testing / entire loom test :( / ECU / cry a bit. Currently the headlight is off and I've backprobed the connectors to reveal I'm not getting power to the immobilizer.  Additionally checked the ECU, and it's not showing power for the immobilizer indicator or power input line - so thinking key switch.

When lifting the tank for a poke about found damp white powder that kinda looked like mould?  What gives?

Regarding mouldy lines, ive had that on both my bikes, a bit of engine heats kills it off and havent noticed any issues as a result.

As John says check the 30A fuse, if it has gone, then check  2 main live feed wires from ignition switch to Immobiliser & into headlight (white connector block)

See pictures, this could have happen, my main fuse blew could not find a reason straight away, found this 1 month later.284012146_540091404452312_4416433542624564869_n.jpg.8d735b50e2ebcf8ef1849ba743e3b698.jpg286294291_1996037583917367_8478923643599023090_n.jpg.066fe0e3496bf81b86ab951288ab6760.jpg284436502_434030418196902_7581586522678447481_n.jpg.dd9d8e069367d42e248685c2fc15cf14.jpg284290827_376828460966805_53653208347510241_n.jpg.34dd6ea593a72c703c80bd2710da6aa9.jpg

Not fuses, as mentioned I'd checked everything short of a full harness check (was thinking it would be easier to just yank the whole lot) before coming here to lament.  It turns (geddit) out it was indeed the keyswitch.  Giving the key an agressive quick turn, everything came to life.  Tried again nothing, soaked the key hole with contact cleaner, few more tries and it was coming on without issue.  Pretty sure the mouldy furring and keyswitch are related, likely due to running the bike idle in the blockstore (not a huge amount bigger than the bike).

Hopefully thats it fixed Michael , Ive not had any trouble with ignition switch but had to strip clean & lube the L/H switch gear , Unfortunately the age is getting to them !
