Posted April 24, 2016 Anyone on here ever had to replace out of spec valve shims..?? I only ask as The Blackbird boys think that checking them every 16,000 is overly cautious...In fact there resident expert says dont bother until at least 60,000 miles.. Does anyone ever bother to check them is probably a good question? 0 Share this post Link to post

At 16000 it will only be a quick glance at 32,000 you might and I mean might need to change 1 or 2. I have heard of a Hornet 900 having not needing any shims until 100,000 miles service. Posted April 24, 2016 This is what I thought lads...it seems as if these motors bed in,and then run like clockwork thereafter.A check at some stage before 30 thou seems like a sensible precaution though. 0 Share this post Link to post
Posted April 25, 2016 Now Last time when valves have been checked was something 54k kms, no need for adjustment, i was planning that after this summer i will check them. 0 Share this post Link to post

Andy I carried out a full service at 24,500 ( ish ) miles, which included balancing the fuel rail, I was surprised to find the rail needed adjusting, my friend checked the shims for me, two of them may need changing later but overall the shims were within the tolerances that were required. I did have an FZR600 that needed a few shims changed once, the difference was noticeable once they were done. To be honest its not a big job to check them, but a pain to get to them, its just worth checking them for peace of mind. 0 Share this post Link to post
Posted April 25, 2016 Thanks Jase.I think that a check somewhere between 20 and 30k is the sensible thing to do.But every 16k isnt as necessary. 0 Share this post Link to post
