Reg/Rec Battery issue

33 posts in this topic

So I have not been using the bike with the last 6 months or so. Start it now and again but thats it. So today had the time for a spin. When to the shed started no problem. Let it idle while I suited up. Got on, rode out of the shed and engine died

I'd fit a new battery and check the voltages again. If they are still wayward then replace the regulator unit.

99% its going to be the battery.

What charger did you use?

Will try and get a new battery tomorrow. I didn't use any charger as I could not find it. Its only a cheap aldi or lidl job anyway.

Battery fitted was a ytx9bs instead of the ytx12bs. Would this cause issues?

I tried a battery off a Hornet 900 on my X11 once...not really up to

the job.I think that was a CTZ10 something something??

| would definitely start with the correct model battery..I always

go for Yuasa myself

if you look at the bikes the 9bs is for they seem to be light weights like 600's and the like so I think you will need something with more grunt and as andy says Yuasa seem to be the best for the bike

Get yourself a proper charger like an Oxford Charger, the reason your old batter wont hold a charge properly will be because the cells have sulficated ( hope I spelt that correctly ) which forms a layer which stops the battery from holding and releasing a charge, with specialist chargers that can reverse that if the battery isn't to far gone.

My Harley doesn't get used for long periods, in fact its off the road for the moment whilst I sort out the gear lever and find out why its surging in first gear ( done this since I got it but has gotten a lot worse ), so at £130 a battery ( they need a big load Harleys to turn them over ) a £50 charger will give the battery years of life rather than a Christmas payout.

A duff battery will make most modern bikes do some really strange things, often making you think there's something wrong with the bike itself.

12.3 at idle headlight on. 14.3 at 5000rpm headlight on.

Ordered a new upgraded regulator from jaws. Going to need it now or later regardless.

12.3 isn't great at all near the 13 V is where you want it to be, this only proves that your charging system is probably working OK, it doesn't mean your battery is actually holding the charge, as soon as the bikes turned off from running it will start discharging.

Very useful, nice find.

Thanks I was looking for something that maybe explained it a little better than I sadly I've become a bit of a battery expert due to buying bikes that have sat up and then had the battery fail.

Usually these are things I look for.

1. Healthy battery 12.9-13.2V

2. If battery is in the high 14V when bike is on then regulator maybe on its way to burning out.

3. If battery is fine but slowly discharges ( brand new battery ) then its time to look at generator/stator

Had all three problems.

None of these are actually expensive to fix, its just that you don't want to be left stranded.

As a general rule for buying a second hand bike, always ask how long the bike hasn't been used if its a never seen rain advert, if its months or weeks at a time then its better to check or change battery as your first course.

Good news for you John, the Honda engine is a good one. Have fun but be careful.

So anyway just to follow up fitted the new jaws reg . Which is plug in the 3 yellow wires to the factory plug under the tank. Which can be done by just removing the seat and a little keyhole surgery. And then connect your plus and minus cables from the reg to your battery. Made no difference to my readings. But no problems showing anyway. Have peace of mind now that the reg is of good quality.

John you should be able to get it re wound mate, it will be like new once that's done, can cost more than a second hand part, but at least your know you will get 10+ years out of it.

Probably the reg/rec playing up. I've just bought a new one from China as mine was playing up. Not fitted it yet as all working OK now, just to be awkward. But that's bikes for ya.
