X11 seat not locating properly - see picture

42 posts in this topic

Just took delivery of the X11 Honda today. The seat will not locate properly. The front peg and mid pegs are going in ok, and the helmet lock is locating into the recess, and it locks ok.

The problem is that the rear is not locking right down for some reason, not sure why.

It has a tail tidy (which i want to reverse, if it is possible) but cant see this being the problem

Here is a picture if it will help:

no, its a mystery. I took the tool roll out thinking it may be that. There is nothing there!  Guess i could post pics of the underside of the seat. The riders part of the seat is textured. Is that right for an X11 ?

Martin,

I take it the seat fit correctly when you got the bike?

Mine is a bit sticky to put back and have to be a bit firm with it pushing towards the tank and down at the same time

I think my seat seems very tight where the two front pegs are

try being a little more assertive Martin :violent1:

Take the bolts out that are holding the bodywork on, they are the wrong bolts, and might be holding the seat pad up. Just a thought

I'll take the 2 bolts out, and try it again thanks for that suggestion ! You are spot on, they are wrong my head mechanic advisor (the wife :rock-on: ) said to look at the parts list on lings, and they are meant to be pan head not hex !

Will try it out as soon as I can :niceone2:

ok, I took the offending bolts out and it didnt make didly squat difference.

Think the seat IS an X11, as it has MCC stamped underneath (can someone verify that please :niceone2: ).

Was talking to a guy today, and he said it has definitely been recovered, and that maybe the cover has been stretched too tight, thus bowing the seat. Will have to investigate tomorrow as just got back from a 400 mile round trip down the M6 in driving snow :help:

http://www.dumpyourphoto.com/photo/view/196212/avH2ZnRpsthe seat saga continues...

I pulled some staples out of the back of the seat, thinking the recovering may have warped the seat. This did not make any difference !

The plastic at the back of the seat is touching the crossmember, but there is still a gap when viewed from the rear. SHould I start cutting the plastic at the back so it sits lower ?

If i knew it would definitely fit, i would invest in a new seat but i just cant be sure till i try another x11 seat.

Anyone around the Rutland/Leicestershire/Peterborough/northants region I can meet up with ?

Also thinking of taking it to Grantham or Peterborough Honda for them to have a look

Heres some more pics of the crossmember and the bit im on about cutting back !

Martin

looking back thru the thread I noticed that the gap between the seat unit and the grab rail where the foam insert fit seems to be too large,so I'm wondering if the sub frame is bent as Herni said. I hope other members comment on this as I don't know if they are all the same also the number stamped under my seat is 20010-mcc-00 but this may be a production run number ??

I will bring my seat into the house tomorrow and compere with your pics as far as I can Bry

ps is it not the dealer problem to put right

EYUP!!! Martin has one of those brackets that I have to reinforce the subframe for a kappa rack etc. In view of this I would have thought the subframe would be okay :dontknow:

Martin, you have the givi strengthening plate fitted, looking at your picture it appears it is over the plastic side panels fixing point, I'm away on holiday for a week, but I will check my givi strengthening plate to see if it is over or under my plastic side panel fixings.

MARTIN!!!!!!!!   photo 1 showing the bracket is bolted down WRONG!!!!

The seat cowl should be on top of the bracket not under it. I believe this is your problem

Yes Martin if you look at Pauls pics the bracket is in place with the seat cowling off the bike,so if you take the 2 bolts out and refit the cowling above bracket I think Paul will be correct,If not I sure we solve it one day but if its  fixes the problem what are we do to rest of the week end :frantics:

I have moved the bracket so it is UNDER the seat cowl now, and that has made a lot of difference.

So, are you saying that the bracket is a givi strengtener, so I can remove it completely ? That may explain why I couldnt find it on lings website ?

Now I have noticed also that the L/H/S silencer is about half an inch higher than the R/H/S when viewed from the back. Is that normal ?

Thanks for your continuing help !

Would it be better to replace the tail tidy with the original Honda Fender ? (anyone know a good place where I might find a second hand one).

HI Martin again

I would replace with honda fender as for getting one I would look on that auction site and see which breakers are doing a x11 and get in touch with them and ask.I know Hills are breaking one and also I sold a x11 to member Marcus and he was think of altering his rear fender so it may be worth while getting in touch with him.As for the givi bracket do not lose it as they are rocking horse pooh and saves you strenghting the rear sub frame if you fit a rack or top box .enjoy sunday Bry

As Bry says above!

ALL Blackbird subframes are slightly twisted where constant use of pillions has been the case. This results in hangers/end cans being lower at one side to the other

Your approximation of about half an inch seems about right.

I am a little suprised that it is the RHS can that is lower as most pillions mount and dismount from the nearside.

Both myself and my partner are right handed so I wouldn't know if left handed pillions may mount and dismount from the offside (perhaps someone left handed on the forum could answer this)

I improved the Blackbird twist by loosening all the subframe mounting bolts and hanger bolts then "untwisted the frame"  tugging on one side pulling on the other then re tightened all the bolts

My X11 has no twist in the subframe leading me to believe that previous owners were solo

Hope this helps Martin
