Blackbird Gearbox into X11

15 posts in this topic

When in Eindhoven at this years X11 Treffen, I recall one of the European owners had fitted a Blackbird 6 speed gearbox straight into the X11.

Am I right in assuming that you'd need the Blackbird gearbox input and output shafts and the gear selector mechanism?

I've always felt that the X11 could do with a 6th gear, and having ridden Blackbirds, have noticed that their gearboxes are much smoother from selecting first to flicking through all the other gears!

Thinks that this may be a project for next year.

The ones you want are what (Honda) call the Main and Counter shafts... the gears are split between the two.

Big job tho Andy!

Yep, looks like it!

Maybe a good time to inspect and if req. refurb the internals of your motor whilst he's at it.

Selector dogs and bushes etc...

Nah just quite liked the idea of having six gears and hopefully a smoother 1st to 2nd gear change.

Don't fordet to re-gear it sprockets wise - (More Expense!)

Ah! I hadn't thought about the sprockets, what would happen if I leave the set up as it is just now? I thought the speedo worked off the final output shaft of the gearbox so the sprockets could remain as std or am I mistaken?

Gear Ratios - 1; 2.529 (43/17), 2; 2.769 (36/13), 3; 1.938 (31/16), 4; 1.316 (25/19), 5; 1.167 (28/24)

Final Reduction - 2.588 (44/17)

Andy Based on 2006 BB gearing I wouldnt worry about sprocket changes as your speedo runs of the output shaft , the only diferences will be the engine rpm , the blackbird 1st gear is the same as x11 2nd gear , then will be closer ratios up to 5th wich is exactly the same as X 5th , so 6th would be basicaly an Overdrive.

Cool that's exactly what I was hoping to achieve, now I've just got to get a BB gearbox at the right price! Greedy uk parts place is asking £240 plus £10 p&P wheras in US I could buy one for £102 plus £50 P&P.

big mistake man!

how the first ratio can be longer than second?

correct gear for the X11:1st 2.769, 2nd 1.938 , 3rd 1.556, 4th 1.316, 5th 1.167, final 17/43

Well, I can tell you what will happen, since my X has a BB engine in it. The standard gear ratios are fairly unusable, unless you are trying for the mobil economy run in top.... You would have to goto 17/46 or similar, certainly 17, the other sprocket depends what you do with your bike (cruise around, etc, or what...). And yes, you will need every piece of the BB gearbox including the shafts, etc. You'll need a speedohealer because the sensor (which is the same) is driven off a different gear in a BB, (and in neither case is it direct from the output shaft...) so it'll be miles out (17% from memory..).

Oops, I should have added, if a gearbox cost 250 quid, hmmm well I bought a whole BB engine for (from my flaky memory) 380. It wasn't exactly hard to bolt in...   :)
