Indicator relay - how to kill it and compatibility

3 posts in this topic

I managed to knacker the wiring on my left front indicator (don't ask, I can be a chump in the garage).

I could have soldered the wiring but had an unopened box of four after market OEM pattern indicators which I'd bought for just these situations. However, when unpacked, these had three wires with bullet connectors instead of the two wires (green and orange) on the original. I imagine the wiring could have been modified (and will check how sometime) but I hate electrics and went for a new indicator with the proper wiring and orange connector.

Burnt out fuse replaced and indicator connected up. Still nothing. I followed the instructions in the workshop manual to check the indicator relay connector for power and continuity. The result was pointing to a dead relay (the other possibility was that there was a break in the ground wire somewhere but thinking about that option brought me out in a cold sweat). Years back when I'd managed to short the wiring on the rear indicators (again, don't ask), I'd lazily shoved a 15A fuse in the 10A slot because that's all I had at the time and then forgot about it. I imagine the overload knackered the relay before the 15A fuse gave out.

Anyway, easy enough to get a 2nd hand relay I thought. Not a chance. You would think that simple gadgets like this would be the same as the Blackbird but Honda was obviously messing with us when it put the X together. So, how much for a new one...around £60 from Lings and Fowlers (and on back order too). Cheaper at CSMNL but post-Brexit there are now higher postage costs. Cheapo one for £11 from eBay? Mmm...could be okay but looks a bit ropey and always a bit worried about plugging something cheaply made into the harness.

Lucky to have a very good local used parts supplier and took my dead relay in. The knowledgeable guy who runs the place was surprised to find nothing in his numerous boxes of Honda indicator relays which was an exact match. Honda, you're such a laugh. Anyway he sold me for a bargain price another Honda one after checking compatibility as the wattage range was different; off a CBR600 I think. A little smaller than the original but  works fine on first fitting just blinks ever so slightly slower. Fingers crossed.

Just be helpful, CSMNL has a compatibility list for the relay part number 38301-MR7-004...

This product fits to 54 models.

As you can probably tell, most of the these bikes are not that common. A quick search on eBay will produce a list of bikes which the cheapo relay I mentioned earlier also fits. This should give you a rough idea of what other 3 pin relays might be compatible for the X11 if you want to give an alternative, used OEM part a go before shelling out £60 for a new one.

After all that waffle, the real moral of the story, is don't knacker your indicator wiring by being cack handed and don't stick a 15A fuse in a 10A slot and forget about, it will bite you in the bum at some point. My simple aim to become less of a garage chump as the years go by.
