Oil Change ????

3 posts in this topic

Yesterdays 4 hour thrash on the yellow X finally clicked the mileage

over to 9000.  Pathetic I know..but as I am lucky enough to have a few

other bikes to tit about on, "it is was it is"  so to speak.

Anyway I last changed the oil and filter at 5700.   roughly 3500 miles ago

and its been in there a year or two.9000 seemed like a nice round figure

to do the oil and filter again..BUT...I checked the dipstick this morning and

a) It hasnt used a drop

B) Its still nice and greenish and clear..

Now Honda state that it doesnt need changing until 8000.I know some

people swear by doing it once a year regardless of mileage..

I dont want do really do this if it isnt really necessary..Seems like a waste of perfectly good oil

If the oil was black  and filthy..no problems I would  do it now,but maybe it can be left a while longer.

Maybe a compromise and do it at 10,000 which would be roughly half the mileage

of what Honda state.

What do you do with yours..any opinions welcomed

I do mine every 4K and like you say it comes out looking new. Trouble is if you looked at it under a microscope it would look very different. It's the lifeblood of the engine so I prefer to err on the side of caution. I always change the filter at the same time too.

Its fine to do it every 8K, but the problem with oil is it breaks down over time, hence why it should be changed every years OR 8000 miles, whatever comes sooner, although the CB1100 is a hot running bugger, it really doesn't use oil.
