Replacing shims.

4 posts in this topic

Okay having checked shims before,  the X-11's was spot on in spec I haven't actually had to change a shim before, seriously Honda's that I have checked have always been good, but I was wondering a few things if I had to change the actual shim, I know I would have to remove the cam to lift the buckets to get to the shim on top of the valve and I know the position of the crank to cams, but I have always wondered about the Cam chain, when putting it back on what would be the correct way of the to make sure that the chain wasn't going to slip a tooth?  Bare in mind I have not had to loosing or remove a cam chain before.

I've never taken the cams out of an x11, the only time I checked the clearances the shims were fine.

On other vehicles I've always secured the chain to the sprocket(s) with cable ties, then suspended the chain, tight, with more cable ties! Relieve the pressure from the CCT first, of course.

I loved the set-up on my old ZX9R, the cam rocker could be slid sideways along the shaft, against a spring. To move it out of the way for easy shim removal, genius design!
